Did your chicken come from a house of horrors? If you eat at Wendy’s, the answer is likely yes. While other major food companies including Chipotle, Panera Bread, Starbucks, Aramark, Pret A Manger, and Compass Group, have already pledged to use only chickens raised under higher welfare standards, Wendy’s still allows its suppliers to pack chickens into dark, crowded, waste-filled warehouses; grow birds so unnaturally fast they are in constant pain; and cut open the throats of chickens while the birds are still conscious. This is animal cruelty no company with morals should support.

Wendy’s brand is in crisis. Your company has fallen behind its competitors on issues of animal welfare and transparency. It is time for Wendy’s to live up to its reputation as a company committed to doing things the right way or risk losing it forever.

Chipotle, Noodles & Company, Panera Bread, Pret A Manger, Shake Shack, Starbucks, and Le Pain Quotidien have all publicly committed to the same fundamental chicken welfare policies for their entire supply chains. Surely additional companies will soon follow their lead.

Like these companies, Wendy’s has both the power and the ethical responsibility to reduce the suffering of millions of birds each year. However, Wendy’s has repeatedly rejected calls by the public to publish detailed, comprehensive animal welfare policies.

Please take immediate action to address this issue by joining your competitors in pledging to dramatically improve chicken welfare by 2024. Wendy’s should agree to source only chickens from farms that use higher-welfare breeds; do not use live-shackle slaughter; and provide enrichments, reduced stocking density, and improved light and litter quality. The company should also commit to third-party auditing to demonstrate compliance with these standards. Until you make these commitments, I will eat elsewhere.

Thank you for speaking up for the animals!

Tortured Chickens

Living in Darkness

Chickens are crammed together and raised in near darkness for their entire lives. Many will never see sunlight until the day they are killed.

Bred to Suffer

Chickens are artificially bred to grow so unnaturally fast they often suffer from crippling leg pain and organ failure brought on by the rapid weight gain.

Sitting in Waste

Birds spend most of their lives sitting in old litter soaked with feces and urine, resulting in painful sores and respiratory problems.

Killed While Conscious

At the end of their lives, chickens are violently shackled and hung upside down, and have their throats cut—all while fully conscious.

Explore the Hidden Lives of Chickens

Chickens are sensitive and intelligent animals with advanced cognitive abilities that rival those of dogs, cats, and even some primates. Studies show that chickens excel at complex mental tasks, can learn from watching each other, and are even able to pass down information from one generation to the next.

Chickens are very social animals who can form deep and meaningful friendships with other birds. Some birds are outgoing and gregarious, while others are more shy and reserved. But all chickens put family first, giving rise to the term “mother hen” to refer to particularly protective parents.

The communication skills of chickens are highly sophisticated and begin developing at an early age. Mother hens will cluck to their chicks while they are still in their eggs, and the unborn chicks will chirp back at them. Researchers know of at least 30 types of vocalizations that chickens make to mean very different things.

The best way for individual consumers to help end this cruelty is to leave animals off their plates.
